VibroAcoustics:
Use of sinusoidal, low frequency (30 - 120 Hz), sound pressure waves, blended with music, for therapeutic use.
The principle and method were publicly described for the first time by Olav Skille at the first ISFMM symposium in 1982. Therapists have, by 2001, collected data from more than 40.000 hours of practical use of VAT. Most descriptions are of anecdotal nature, and have mainly been centred around testing out the validity of Skille's descriptions and findings. The effect of the therapy can be divided in three main areas:
1. 1. Spasmolytic and muscle relaxing effect.
2. 2. Increase of blood circulation in the extremities
3. 3. Marked, but varying effect on the vegetative system.
VA-therapy has a physical element which is more profound than most other therapies which use music and sounds as therapeutic medium. Music and the massaging frequencies are transferred directly to the body of the client, who is sitting in a chair or lying on a bed which are equipped with loudspeakers ortransducers.
BASIC THEORY
Music is used for relaxation, to receive energy, to create moods and to serve as auditive background for various purposes. Music of different kinds may influence our emotions. Music and suggestions are used in programs which make it possible for the busy man of to-day to fight stress. It can also be used for getting athletes to "explode" just right and in the right moment.
All this, however is aimed at the ear's reception of sound.
Acoustically speaking - the body is but a skin sack filled with water. If we imagine such a sack being placed upon a series of loudspeakers and send bass sound through these, we understand that the sound vibrations will be felt at any point of the surface of the sack. The sound waves move through the water and transfer energy to the surface of the sack. This means that all water molecules inside the sack have been put in motion.
If we imagine a human being in the place of the skin sack, the sound will move through the body - as if it were water - and we can feel the vibrations on the body surface. And - all cells inside the body have been vibrated by the sound waves. The body has received "internal massage". Thus organs in the body which we cannot reach by traditional methods - nerves, glands, lungs, heart, deep-lying blood vessels, brain tissue - are exposed to sound vibrations. This is the basic idea of all Vibroacoustic therapy.
Our bodies are exposed to sound massage in many ways. It is so common that we seldom give this fact a thought. When we speak or sing we produce sounds, and the vibrations from these sounds can be felt if we place our hands on the chest, back, larynx or the top of the skull of the person who is vocalising. These vibrations are not dangerous for the human being. It even may be so that these “personal” vibrations are of vital importance for us, in order to develop physically and mentally in a healthy way.
The sound vibrations are transferred to the body during Vibroacoustic therapy. The only difference is that the source of sound is external, and that the sound sources are spread over a larger physical area.
MAIN PRINCIPLES FOR CHOOSING FREQUENCIES
1. Spasmolytic frequencies : 40 Hz and 60 Hz.
2. Low-back pains : 52 Hz.
3. Lung massage : 50 Hz.
4. Neck and shoulder pains : 68 Hz.
5. Head-ache/migraine: Tentatively frequencies in the higher areas, best results obtained with 86 Hz (?).
6. Rheumatism : Usually frequencies based in 40 Hz area.
7. Stress : Frequency area : Between 40 Hz and 68 Hz. The choice of music may be very important. The music should be harmonious and without marked rhythm.
8. Muscle pains : Frequencies chosen according to where the pains are felt. The lowest frequencies are used for the larger muscle groups.
9. Cramps/muscular over-use syndrome: Usually frequencies in the 40 Hz and 60 Hz area.
10. Menstrual pains/dysmenhorrea: 52 Hz.
It is recommended that VA-equipment should be used by persons who have a background in medicine, paramedicine or a therapeutic field.
SYMPTOMS OF OVER-EXPOSURE MAY APPEAR IF:
a) The volume (amplitude) has been too strong (high)
b) We have used a frequency area which is not right for the client.
c) The duration of the session has been too long for the client.
Over-exposure symptoms are:
Cold sweat
Dizziness
Tachycardia or subjective feeling of unpleasantly strong heart activity
Anxiety
Muscular pains after session
Acute increased pain.
If focal pain remains for several days, it may be a sign of local inflammation, and a physician should be consulted to exclude this possibility. An eventual inflammation should be treated medically before VA-therapy is resumed.
CHOICE OF FREQUENCY AREAS AND CHOICE OF MUSIC, RELATED TO DIAGNOSES
The main frequency area for Vibroacoustic therapy lies in the octave between 40 Hz and 80 Hz. For some conditions, however, we have used frequencies above and under this octave. Therapy programs can be made from 35 Hz to 120 Hz.
VIBROACOUSTIC THERAPY
The conditions listed here are only meant as examples from the experiences which have been reported to me from 1985 until today. I list them here so other researchers can prove – or disprove – our findings.
The effects you see below are based on purely empirical data and small populations. Theoretical models from controlled research may improve both accuracy and methodical approach.
| Aphasia | VAT combined with speech therapy is generally positive, and can increase the effect of speech therapy. | Brain stroke | The main strategy is to give as much sensory stimulation as possible. This means a very varied use of music and frequencies.
